Chevrolet Silverado 2022: a ZR2 version is added to the range
Introduced in 2019, the fourth generation Chevrolet Silverado gets a solid update for model year 2022.
In addition to a new ZR2 variant focused on off-road driving, Chevrolet's full-size pickup will (finally!) Adopt a nicely modernized interior and offer an upgraded four-cylinder powertrain. Let's take a closer look.
The Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 is coming
Chevrolet intends to capitalize on the excitement surrounding off-road vehicles by offering a ZR2 version of its Silverado. Powered by the 6.2L V8 engine, it stands out with its anchor hooks and the addition of plates to protect the underbody of the pickup.
This new version of the Silverado also has a camera integrated into the grid to increase visibility on a dangerous course. Thanks to a driving mode developed for off-road, it will be possible to drive with just one pedal. At General Motors, we have also worked to optimize the approach and departure angles, which are respectively 32.8 degrees and 23.3 degrees. The Silverado ZR2 benefits from Multimatic suspensions.
An updated interior
While the interior of full-size pickup trucks from Chevrolet - and GMC! - lagging behind compared to that of the Ram 1500 and Ford F-150, we are finally bringing a good dose of modernity for 2022.
Until 2021, the gear lever was still attached to the steering column. It is now positioned on the console. We also note that the LT versions and those above in the range will be equipped with a 13.4-inch touchscreen linked infotainment system. As for the instrumentation, it is now fully digital and takes the form of a 12.3-inch screen. Note that the High Country version will have its interior partially decorated with wood.
As you can see in the photos, there are also some cosmetic changes. The grille and lights of multiple versions of the Silverado have been redesigned.
More torque for the 4-cylinder
In terms of powertrains, the changes are relatively minor for the coming year. The American manufacturer tells us that it has worked to optimize its base engine, the 2.7L turbocharged four-cylinder. Previously, the torque developed was 348 lb-ft. For 2022, it climbs to 420 pound-feet. As for the power generated, it remains at 310 horsepower. In particular, it is said to have stiffened the crankshaft by 30%. It can tow up to 9,500 pounds in the rear-wheel drive version.
Unlike Ford, which eliminated its diesel V6, General Motors kept its Duramax inline six-cylinder engine. The 5.3L and 6.2L V8s also continue to feature in the catalog.
Super Cruise
In addition to the countless driver assistance features, General Motors says the Silverado may be equipped with a blind spot alert that will be able to account for a trailer being pulled by the vehicle. Note also that the High Country version can be equipped with the Super Cruise driving assistance system and that it can be used even when towing.
At this time, the price range and arrival date of this new version of the Silverado has not been disclosed. During the presentation, nothing was mentioned about the GMC Sierra. However, it is fair to believe that he too will be entitled to most of these improvements.
