GM delays production of its electric pickup trucks
October 17 2023, Guillaume Rivard
General Motors pulled out all the stops with its GMC Hummer EV , an electric pickup truck with extraordinary dimensions and exceptional capabilities (not to mention the price that comes with it), but the fact is many more people are waiting for the Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV .
However, the manufacturer wants to take it easy and has decided to postpone the start of production of these two models at the Orion factory until the end of 2025. Why? No, it's not because of the ongoing auto workers' strike in the United States.
The same spokesperson added that “engineering improvements” must be made in order to increase the profitability of the products in question. Unfortunately, there are no further details on this.
Remember that GM is already assembling Silverado EVs (whose backlog exceeded 150,000 reservations in the summer of 2022) alongside the Hummer EV in its Factory Zero complex in Detroit. A new shift will be added in 2024, allowing the Sierra EV to join its brothers.
As for the Orion factory, which will soon end production of the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Bolt EUV , the plan was to convert it with US$4 billion to start manufacturing Silverado EV and Sierra EV to the end of 2024 as these vans will generate more profits. Now we know it will be a year later. In short, no vehicle will leave this place for two years.
About a thousand employees at Orion could be reassigned to other GM plants, including Factory Zero. They will have the opportunity to return once the work is completed.
The Silverado EV currently offers two versions, WT (510 hp and 615 lb-ft) and RST (660 hp and 780 lb-ft). The towing capacity rises to 10,000 lbs in the case of the second and the sprint from 0 to 97 km/h is accomplished in 4.5 seconds. Both boast of traveling up to 640km and regaining around 160km in just 10 minutes via a 350kW fast station.
