2022 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra: When the 4-Cylinder Engine Wins
April 21 2022,
10 or 20 years ago, it would have been heretical to claim that one day most General Motors pickup trucks in the full-size class would be powered by turbocharged 4-cylinder engines only.
Yet that is what happens. Of course, we want to offer a vehicle with the best possible fuel consumption, but without affecting reporting capabilities.
Well, through a long process of development and refinement, the 2.7-litre 4-cylinder turbo that powers the model is an example of skill and frugality.
And for 2022, it's more efficient than ever. Let's see how it has been improved to make your life easier.
Rigidity
To ensure better efficiency and durability of its 2.7L 4-cylinder engine, GM has gone to great lengths. The engineers worked on the crankshaft to strengthen it, which was done up to 30%. The rest of the block has also benefited from improvements, particularly relating to technologies used in diesel mechanical design, all to offer an engine that will be more robust and durable.
Then there's that torque that jumps from 348 to 420 lb-ft, a jump of some 20 percent. This translates into better efficiency when dragging a load behind (between 9000 and 9600 pounds, depending on the version). In fact, the engine works with more flexibility, in addition to being quieter, we promise.
Better, on the road in full tow, we will notice a more efficient work of the eight-speed transmission which is paired with the mechanics. It will downshift more precisely, at the best time, and faster. Consequently, when power is needed, the faster gear changes will promote better response behind the wheel.
A more efficient cooling system has also been thought out and it will serve the model.
General Motors is betting a lot on this engine, because for 2022, it is making it the standard block of even more models. The WT, Custom, Custom Trail Boss, TL, RST and LT Trail Boss variants benefit from this from the start at Chevrolet. On the GMC side, the Pro, SLE and Elevation models were chosen.
That's why the 2.7L turbo 4-cylinder is said to be a must, as it kind of becomes the face of General Motors' full-size pickup trucks. Have you tried it? If not, now is the time to act. We are waiting for you.
