A Look at the 2023 GMC Canyon's New Turbo Engine
August 19 2022,
The GMC Canyon is completely renewed in 2023 and one of the most important new elements is the 2.7L turbo engine which becomes the only engine offered in the Canyon.
More power than the V6
The 2.7L turbocharged four-cylinder that sits under the hood of the 2023 GMC Canyon is an engine that's already been proven in the full-size GMC Sierra. Available in only one version in the Canyon, this engine releases 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, which is more than the 3.6L V6 engine that equipped the old version. Moreover, the torque of this new engine is even higher than that of the 2.8L diesel engine that was also available in the 2022 Canyon.
Better capacities
The 2023 GMC Canyon benefits from its new engine to offer superior capabilities to the old model in terms of off-road driving. In fact, the only version of the turbocharged engine offered in the 2023 Canyon was developed specifically for off-road driving, which is why its maximum torque is reached at just 3,000 rpm. Combined with an 8-speed automatic transmission and efficient all-wheel drive with electronically locking differentials front and rear, this allows the Canyon to overcome any obstacle with ease. In addition, the arrival of the new engine does not reduce the towing capacities of the 2023 Canyon, which continues to be able to tow up to 7,700 pounds in AT4, Elevation or Denali configuration.
Technologies that improve fuel economy
In addition to offering impressive power, the new engine of the GMC Canyon 2023 benefits from numerous technologies aimed at improving its fuel consumption. For example, the 2.7L engine has the Active Fuel Management system which reduces fuel consumption by deactivating two of the cylinders when driving at steady speed. Also, this engine features stop-start technology that shuts off the engine when the Canyon is stationary and restarts it as soon as the driver takes their foot off the brake pedal.
