9K SHARES New LZ0 Duramax To Replace LM2 3.0L GM Engine In 2023

It has been brought to our attention that the 3.0-liter, LM2 Duramax engine that comes in the half-ton Chevrolet Silverados and GMC Sierras is being replaced by a new engine known as LZ0 Duramax. General Motors has not released any news on this new platform but we can assume that this new edition of the engine will come with gains across the board.

The LM2 engine is and has been an incredible engine. We’ve had testimonials all year from owners claiming 30+ on the fuel economy, plenty of horsepower and torque, and a comfortable ride as a bonus. So with a nearly perfect track record from consumers, no major recalls, and they are selling at a decent rate, what or why could GM want to do this?

The only thing we can think of is that they are making improvements to the 3.0-liter that will push the capabilities even further. If you are already a front runner in the small diesel truck market, why not separate yourself from the others, right?

An engine that already makes 277-horsepower and 460-lb/ft of torque, gets 30+ MPG fuel economy, and has a 9,000-pound towing capacity, what more can you ask? Assuming this update will fix the rare crankshaft position sensor issue, we aren’t sure what more we can ask for from such a fun truck. One thing that is weird, though, is that this engine is only slated for the trucks. The Tahoe, Suburban, and the Caddilac Escalade are not included in this revision. Time will tell.

We will stay on top of this news and let you all know what transpires in the weeks to come. We are excited to get our hands on a new rig and see what this update is all about. Do you expect more power? More torque? How about an even better fuel economy? Let us know in the comments below! Stay tuned to Diesel Army for more.
